Clinical trials are research studies that evaluate drugs in development. When a new treatment/drug is being researched and developed, it must be tested extensively to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of the treatment on patients’ health. Clinical trials are an essential part of developing new drugs to treat patients. Watch our video to learn more
An expanded access program is carried out at discretion of physicians for patients with an unmet medical need. It usually has broader inclusion criteria. The eligibility criteria of expanded access programs usually allow for a broader group of patients. This means that a patient who is not eligible for a clinical trial might be able to access an investigational drug via an expanded access program.
Some patients who are not eligible to participate in a clinical trial may be able to access investigational drugs outside of a clinical trial through an expanded access program.
In general, patients should meet the following criteria for an expanded access program:
In addition, each expanded access program will have its own specific criteria for patients. For most patients, the only way to access investigational therapies is to participate in a clinical trial. For a patient to enter an expanded access program, the pharmaceutical company must be willing to provide the drug through an expanded access program. myTomorrows can help with requesting this from the pharmaceutical company.
Their treating physician should discuss this with their patient and decide whether requesting the investigational drug is in their patient’s best interest. Physicians then prescribe the drug and oversee their treatment.
Each clinical trial has specific criteria to determine who can participate. These are called clinical trial eligibility criteria; they help ensure that patients who are participating in a trial are alike.
For example, they may need to have the same type and stage of disease. This helps ensure the trial’s outcomes are the result of the investigational new drug being evaluated. Clinical trial eligibility criteria are also important for the safety of the patient.
myTomorrows does not determine the eligibility of patients but helps with pre-screening them before referring them to a clinical trial. This is only done on broad criteria that are either publicly available or agreed upon with the site (age, location or gender, for instance).

Patients usually do not have to pay for the majority of clinical trial costs. Drug manufacturers typically make the treatment in a clinical trial available free of charge. However, there may be other costs associated with participating in a clinical trial, such as additional medical appointments or travel expenses. Review any possible costs with the clinical trial staff and with your insurance provider before enrolling in a clinical trial.
